President Michael D Higgins Patron of The Volunteer Ireland Awards

Volunteer Ireland is honoured to have the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, as the long standing patron of the Volunteer Ireland Awards.

Words From The President

“Each day and every day in this country, each act of voluntary participation combines to form the glue, the cement that binds and unifies our society in common purpose.”

This was the sentiment spoken by President Higgins when he addressed the awardess at the 2011 Volunteer Ireland Awards. He went on to acknowledge “the powerful resource” that volunteers represent and how “Citizenship should be about providing whatever is necessary, to remove every obstacle, and to afford every facility, so that every person is able, on the basis of equality, to participate and share in our society.”

Each year, whether in person or in writing, the president conveys his gratitude and admiration to our Volunteer Ireland Awardees.

A Message from the president, 2019.

I would like to send my best wishes to all those who are taking part in this Year’s Volunteer Ireland Awards.

It is always so very positive and encouraging to witness the strong tradition of community spirit and volunteering that continues to be the backbone of Irish society. I would like to congratulate all those who are receiving awards this evening. I thank you, on behalf of the Irish People, for your spirit of solidarity and participation, and for all you do to enhance the lives of your fellow citizens.

Go raibh mile maith agaibh fo léir.

Michael D. Higgins
