Volunteer Spotlight: Geraldine Warde, Foroige

Geraldine Warde has been a Volunteer leader with Moore Foróige club in South Roscommon for the last 2 years, a role that she greatly enjoys.

I was approached by the club's current leader seeking my interest in becoming actively involved as a volunteer leader in the local Foróige club in Moore. As a mum of two I recognise the needs of young people, but was cautious that my daughters would not want their mam involved in their youth club. However after thinking about it, I realised that there would not be a youth club if people like me didn’t get involved. I also enjoy new challenges and am a firm believer “in testing new ground”.

Volunteering is something I feel, when you give willingly i.e. time/energy, a feel good factor is achieved. From being involved in Foróige I got to learn and understand the logics and dynamics attached to the leading youth organisation in Ireland. Foróige’s purpose/ethos is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own community. I believe that this purpose includes the volunteers also as it has offered me many opportunities and new friendships along the way. I enjoy attending the many outings/trips within the club, organising workshops, attending conferences with club members and being part of the Foróige family in County Roscommon. One of the highlights for me in recent times was traveling as a group of volunteers to Edinburgh for a weekend, this was invaluable as I got to know fellow volunteers throughout the county and form friendships which will benefit both my development and the development of my youth club within the county of Roscommon. My fellow volunteers have offer support and experience to me as I endeavour to support the development of young people in Moore.

The Foróige regional youth officer within my region provides a mechanism of support to all leaders/volunteers when necessary through trainings, and ongoing consultancy with volunteers which is vital to carrying out the ethos of Foróige and most importantly to encourage and invite potential Foroige volunteers/leaders to become actively involved in the promotion and organisation of Foróige in the locality.

I am delighted to be able to volunteer and Foróige was the best fit for me. I would encourage people throughout Ireland to get involved and become a volunteer with your local Foróige club or indeed why not expand your county remit by setting up a youth club in your area, you won’t regret it!
