When John’s wife helped open up a boxing club, he was asked to volunteer for “just one night…” and the rest was fate. As Head Coach at the Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club, John plays a vital role in leading training sessions, developing athletes’ skills, and fostering a positive, disciplined environment. He volunteers his time to mentor young people, offering guidance both inside and outside the gym. Through his mentorship, he helps them build self-esteem, resilience, and respect — qualities that extend far beyond boxing. John often organises community outreach programs and free introductory sessions to engage local youth, especially those who might benefit from positive role models and a sense of belonging. His dedication has made the club not just a place to train, but a supportive environment where young people can learn discipline, teamwork, and life skills.
When he’s not volunteering ring-side, John can be found volunteering pitch-side, acting as a coach, manager and then vice chairperson for his local soccer club. “John stands out not only for his skill and dedication but for his kindness, humility, and genuine care for others,” writes his nominator.

Since 2022 Amy has volunteered consistently, attending two training sessions a week with Special Olympics and supporting Arch Club every fortnight, building meaningful connections with every participant. Her actions create a ripple effect. Amy has empowered individuals with disabilities to participate actively, feel valued, and access services and resources more confidently. By learning sign language, Amy broke down barriers for members who depend on it, allowing them to communicate effectively, feel understood, and participate fully. Her support extended to technical and media assistance during training sessions, ensuring members could navigate challenges and remain engaged. Her guidance, encouragement, and consistent support have helped members overcome personal and social barriers, making sports and social activities more accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved. Amy serves as a mentor and role model, demonstrating patience, kindness, and enthusiasm that inspire athletes and volunteers alike. “Her genuine interest in each individual and her observant, kind approach creates an environment where everyone can thrive,” writes her nominator.

Kerrie is the Buddy of Buddies! Beginning as her Transition Year idea, Kerrie designed and introduced a Buddy System that paired young players of all abilities with trained volunteers. The Buddy System quickly became the heart of Dungarvan Rugby’s Inclusion Taster Programme, which welcomed seventeen children—many joining a sports club for the first time. Kerrie worked on and off the pitch, mentoring buddies, supporting players, and building confidence in each participant. Parents regularly commented on how their children’s self-esteem and happiness improved, and how they looked forward to every Wednesday with Kerrie and her team. Her work has had ripple effects throughout the community. It encouraged parents, coaches, and local youths to get involved, and fostered strong connections with community partners such as Waterford Sports Partnership, Munster Rugby, and Dungarvan Autism Friendly. Kerrie’s nominator writes that “She brings warmth, understanding, and a true sense of inclusion to everything she does. She is not just a helper; she is a leader who inspires others to believe that they too can make a difference.”
