Loneliness is a growing issue across Europe, with 13% of people experiencing it regularly. In Ireland and elsewhere, Volunteer Centres are already a vital resource for building community connection. However, engaging those most affected by loneliness requires new skills, structured support, and stronger collaboration between organisations.
BEAM introduces the Building Bridges Model (BBModel), a simple but powerful approach that combines knowledge, companionship, hosting, and community. It is about creating pathways into society where nobody is left behind. Volunteer Centres are perfectly placed to bring this model to life – they already know the heartbeat of their local communities, and with BEAM, they gain the tools to make their reach even deeper and their impact even greater.
Community Guides, trained and supported through the partners, will become local companions for those experiencing loneliness. They are not only mentors but also neighbours, connectors, and champions of inclusion. Their presence sends a powerful message: you belong here, and your community needs you too. BEAM gives us the tools, training, and policy influence to:
Locally, all the partners they will train guides, support individuals, and build inclusive communities. Nationally and internationally, they will advocate for systemic change, ensuring loneliness and exclusion are addressed as shared European challenges.
Through this work, BEAM not only meets Erasmus+ priorities but creates a long-term model for reducing loneliness, strengthening civic participation, and building inclusive, resilient communities across Ireland and Europe.
