Blog: No Name! Club Marks 40 Years 1978-2018

No! Name Club founders Eamonn Doyle, Fr. Tom Murphy and Eddie Keher

Edith Geraghty, Programme and PR Officer with No! Name Club talks to us about the history of the organisation and what they’re all about. This year marks 40 years since No! Name Club was established and Edith tells us about the incredible impact their volunteers have had across four decades.

No Name! Club is a National Youth Organisation founded in 1978 and operates in four provinces, with clubs throughout the country. In 1978, three friends Fr. Tom Murphy, Eamonn Doyle and Eddie Keher, were concerned with the alcohol culture and how young people were becoming more exposed to it.

They sought to resolve the issue, where an alternative to alcohol could be provided. They discussed the problem at hand and an idea began to take shape in their minds. They decided to form their very own club. This would be a club where young people could come together and enjoy themselves in a comfortable environment that would be free from alcohol and other drugs.

No Name! Clubs are run by and for young people aged 15 years + who come together in safe and lively environments where there is fun, friendship and enjoyment without the pressure of alcohol or other drugs. Young people come together with a group of adult volunteers to organise and participate in our National Events such as the National Youth Conference, Youth Awards and our Supertalent Competition, while at club level taking part in regional events like Valentines and Christmas Balls, discos, adventure days and community initiatives.

“No Name! Clubs respect the dignity, value and uniqueness of all young people by supporting, advocating and helping to safeguard their right to enjoy life, feel respected and to mature without a reliance on alcohol and other drugs”

No Name Club Mission Statement

Over the last 40 years our amazing volunteers have benefitted thousands of young people in allowing them to experience an alcohol free environment. Our volunteers have made our organisation what it is today and it is in tribute to them that we are celebrating the foundation of the club on Saturday the 22nd of September at the Newpark Hotel in Kilkenny where the first event of No Name! Club was held.

Volunteering with No Name! Club is a rewarding experience; you will be joining an organisation that truly values its volunteers. In return you will learn new skills and develop new friendships. No Name! Club supports all of our adult volunteers by providing Garda Vetting, Child Protection Training and the support of a dedicated Programme Officer. Induction Training and Alcohol and Drug Awareness training is delivered to all our clubs. We would be delighted to speak with you about starting a club in your area or volunteering at an existing No Name! Club. For more information, check us out on and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
