John Healy, Bru Youth Service

Walkinstown, Dublin

John has worked tirelessly for the young people of his community for 40 years. John has been and continues to be the linchpin leader of Bru Youth Club for the past 40 years. The Club has two sections; junior and senior that meet on Monday and Thursday evenings.  Overall, these meetings cater for 100 young people from the Crumlin and Walkinstown area.  He has proven to be open to new ideas and ensures there is a wide and interesting programme of activities for the young people. During the summer months, John volunteers as a leader for Bru Youth Service’s Annual Summer Programme.

John is a founding member of the Bra Youth Service and was part of a concerted group effort to gain funding for setting up and running the service and its state of the art youth centre in 2008. He is an active member of the Bru Youth Service ltd Board of Management- an independent, local voluntary management structure. He also is the community representative on the Project Committee for the Poddle Close Garda Youth Diversion Project.

The staff and his fellow volunteers and at Bru Youth Service nominated John, Jacinta Conroy of Bru Youth Service said “John has a passionate belief in the power of youth work to enhance the lives of young people. He brings wisdom, understanding and a deep knowledge of human nature in his approach to young people who have great respect for him. As a youth work student on work placement with the Bru Youth Service said recently -  He has a great outlook on young people, he will never turn a young person away and he will always give them a second chance with a clean sheet. John is massively supportive of us who work in the Bra Youth Service. He is the force behind keeping the Bra Youth Club going for all these years.”
