Fintan Mulligan, 121digital

Ashford, Wicklow, Category Winner

Fintan is Founder of 121digital. Fintan worked for 30 years in computer software and mobile phone technology. Ten years ago he ran mobile phone lessons in schools in Bray and Cabinteely for adults. He is passionate about helping people use their mobile phone to the level of their own ability for their communication, safety, security and convenience. He started 121digital three years ago in order to help in his local community and he quickly discovered an on-going and wider demand for lessons.

121digital matches student volunteer teachers with senior learners, offering lessons directly to seniors in the community to help them communicate with their family and friends. The ability to operate a phone can significantly help to reduce an older person’s sense of isolation, particularly those who live alone in rural areas. 121digital is established in seven County Wicklow schools and three County Kerry schools. More and more schools are contacting Fintan every week to learn how 121digital works. With his hands-on approach, Fintan has worked tirelessly to cultivate and expand this unique and invaluable service. Marc Mulligan, Fintan’s son, nominated him for a Volunteer Ireland Award, he said “Dad and his other volunteer Mentors and Tutors, have made technology accessible to hundreds of people so far, putting his time and money into 121digital, cultivating it, nurturing it, offering it to all.”
