The National Day of Volunteering takes place on Friday the 1st of October 2010
What is the National Day of Volunteering?
The aim of The National Day of Volunteering - is to encourage everyone in Ireland to give volunteering a go, to show that – even if it’s only for a minute, an hour, a day – volunteering can make a big difference and be a lot of fun. This year, the National Day of Volunteering it will take place on Friday, 1st of October, 2010.
How does it work?
For the National Day of Volunteering, we encourage people to think creatively about what needs to be done in their community and then use the day to make it happen. In the summer months prior to the National Day of Volunteering, Volunteer Centres Ireland and our member Volunteer Centres located all over the country work with community and voluntary organisations, developing hands-on volunteering opportunities to take place on the day.
We then encourage members of the public – individuals, groups, families, schools, students, employees – any one and everyone! – to sign up to get involved in them. The opportunities are wide and varied: from painting, decorating and restoration work, to environmental clean-ups; from day trips, to sporting and entertainment events.
We also encourage people to initiate their own projects or to commit a ‘random act of volunteering’ on the day and let us know what it is. It could be shining their neighbour’s brasses or picking up that litter they happen to pass every day – really whatever they think needs doing and can be done.. It all happens through our dedicated website where a host of guides, FAQs and information packs are also available to help and inspire people and organisations to get involved.
