In 2009 volunteers recruited through volunteer centres contributed €5,471, 175 to the Irish Economy through the cost of their free labour alone. Last year almost 5,000 volunteers were placed with organisations by one of twenty local volunteer centres operating around the country.
The volunteer centres, who are collectively funded around €2.2 million by the government, saw a huge surge in the numbers of volunteers coming forward last year. Many of those coming forward had been effected by the recession as ’recently made redundant’ became one of the top 8 reasons why people registered to volunteer last year. Many others stepped forward as their working hours were cut but more wanted to show solidarity with the people around them and give back to their communities as the economic crisis.
