Volunteer Ireland is delighted to congratulate Michael D. Higgins on his election as the ninth President of Ireland. During his recent election campaign, President Higgins visited a ’National Day of Volunteering’ project in Dublin. Celebrating the day, he spoke of the contribution of volunteers throughout Ireland:
"The work and commitment of volunteers throughout this country is testament to the spirit, generosity and indeed determination of the Irish people. Particularly in times when so many are facing their own challenges at a personal and family level, it is an important and significant gesture, which each of these volunteers make by reaching out and working together to make a better life for those around them, for their communities and indeed for those generations yet to come.
"Their commitment is an inspiration and reminds us how much can be achieved when everyone participates and everyone is respected.”
Volunteer Ireland looks forward to working with President Higgins in fostering an inclusive Irish society which values the crucial role volunteers play in creating a more democratic, caring and responsible Ireland.
