Volunteer Centres Ireland would like to thank the thousands of volunteers who came out to Give it a Swirl and in doing so showed the nation that by volunteering for a few short hours, they can make a huge difference.
Last Friday, volunteers turned out in their thousands to take part in the third annual Give it a Swirl - the national day of volunteering. They came from right across the country and from a variety of backgrounds - school children, asylum seekers, older volunteers, unemployed people, corporate companies, people with physical and intellectual disabilities and individual members of the public all proved last Friday that volunteering is for everyone, is a lot of fun and can make a huge difference in the community and to the lives of those who take part. So thank you to one and all for making Give it a Swirl such an enormous success.
Thank you also to the volunteer centres and the organisations who helped to carve out the wonderfully diverse, interesting and meaningful opportunities and projects that attracted so many volunteers to Give it a Swirl 2009.
From gardening to litter picks, painting to skill-sharing, befriending to celebrating volunteering - more than 170 individual projects took part in Give it a Swirl - some of them involving hundreds of volunteers in hands-on projects around the country.
Once again a special thank you to Miriam O’Callaghan and Pat Shortt for their support in mobilising interest in Give it a Swirl in the run up to the day itself and to Denise Chambers, Cathy Flynn, Kevin Corr, and Fintan Kennedy ’Fink’ who shared their experiences of volunteering in honour of Give it a Swirl with the Afternoon Show, The Gerry Ryan Show and on the 6.1 news.
