EYV2011 National Volunteer Management Conference
Volunteer Ireland today held the European Year of Volunteering 2011 Volunteer Management Conference in Dublin. The event attracted Volunteer Managers, volunteers and staff from over 100 community and voluntary organisations in Ireland. The conference also marked ‘International Volunteer Managers Day’, which was celebrated with events worldwide earlier this week.

The EYV2011 Conference featured a series of thought-provoking workshops and presentations by leading professionals in the field of volunteer management. The keynote address was delivered by Rob Jackson, Director of Rob Jackson Consulting and former Director of Development and Innovation at Volunteering England. Other speakers included Christine Irvine, Senior Policy & Information Officer with Volunteer Now, Stuart Gartland, Fingal Volunteer Centre Manager, and Verena Tarpey, Fundraising Director with Rape Crisis Midwest.

Minister of State and European Affairs, Lucinda Creighton, opened the event. Speaking at the EYV2011 Volunteer Management Conference, Minister Creighton said “It is vital to recognise the huge role volunteering plays. While no volunteer thinks of an end reward we can maintain interest and dedication through recognition and encouragement. The European Union has long acknowledged the importance of volunteering. Volunteers are the agents of our shared European values and objectives, in terms of promoting social cohesion, solidarity and active participation. The experience of community and voluntary organisations shows that there is a need at all levels – EU, national regional and local – to make people aware of the value of volunteers to a strong and healthy society.”

Yvonne McKenna, CEO of Volunteer Ireland commented on the importance of Volunteer Managers, she said that ‘Volunteer Managers are the backbone of the community and voluntary sector. These dedicated group of individuals help to inspire and enable volunteers to make a difference in their communities. Today’s conference provided a great forum for discussion amongst peers and a platform to highlight best practice in volunteer management. We hope attendees enjoyed the conference and we look forward to holding similar events in the future.”
