Dublin City Volunteer Week 2010
The aim of Dublin City Volunteer Week (1st to 7th June 2010) is to celebrate and acknowledge the positive impact of volunteering in the life of the city, and recognize the volunteers who contribute their time and skills to their communities.

As 2010 is European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, Volunteering Ireland particularly wants to emphasise how volunteers develop stronger communities by helping local organisations providing basic vital services to their communities, including traditionally marginalised groups.

It leads and coordinates the week of events and activities by community and voluntary organisations, second and third-level educational institutions and businesses. Dublin City Volunteer week provides an opportunity for community and voluntary organisations to host their own events or activities (thank you events, information workshops or get-togethers) to celebrate their volunteers.

This year’s events include:

  • Age Action organizing a party for all volunteers on Monday June 7th
  • Amnesty International gearing up for a fun Bingo night on Wednesday 2nd June
  • Trinity College doing a Gardening Outreach at Echlin House, an under-18s residential service run by Crosscare Young Peoples Services on Saturday May 29th
  • Dublin Zoo offering free guided tours for volunteers from other organisations

Volunteering Ireland will also host a number of key events during the week including:

Mon 31st May, Mansion House:
Official Launch by the Lord Mayor Cllr. Emer Costello

Tue 1st June, Meeting House Square Temple Bar:
“Make Your Mark” – Fun open day with volunteer artists, storytellers, musicians conducting workshops and helping children and adults express their view of volunteering

Thurs 3rd June, Russell Court Hotel:
“Volunteer Challenge” Table Quiz – teams made up of staff and volunteers from Dublin-based organisations will compete for a prize fund to be donated to the winning team’s organisation.
