Congratulations to Christine Buckley who has been awarded European Volunteer of the Year
Christine, who has lobbied and campaigned for more than 25 years to bring attention to the plight of those who were abused in institutional care, received the honour in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Saturday.

Christine was selected to represent Ireland at the Irish Involved Awards organised by Volunteering Ireland in a cermony at the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham.

Christine has campaigned tirelessly on behalf of victims of institutional abuse for more than 25 years. Her courage has enabled thousands of people to feel free from the scarring of the emotional, physical and sexual abuse they were subjected to. Christine was one of the first to speak out about her own experiences, which culminated in an apology in 1999 by an Taoiseach on behalf of the State to all victims of institutional abuse government, as well as the establishment of a nationwide counselling service, a Commission of Inquiry into Institutional Abuse, Redress Board and tracing service.

Speaking about being nominated for the Ireland Involved Awards, the national awards to honour Ireland’s volunteers, Christine said: “I wish to thank my fellow director, Carmel McDonnell Byrne, for all the work that she has done as an unsung volunteer over the years for our fellow survivors. Special thanks to the HSE, the VEC and the Government for taking our proposal on board and providing the valuable resources which has enabled our volunteering to achieve such fruitful benefits for survivors and their families.”
